He's milk, and I'm pickles - sound terrible together, but in real life make a heavenly pair(if too nauseating, insert your own food( choices...the theory's still the same).

There's the little things that we're split on. Movies: he's more into action and sci-fi, whereas I have loads of retro classroom and exploitation films, cartoons and a ton of Hugh Laurie(purrrr). We meet in the middle for two things - comedy(when in a rut, go straight to Monty Python or stand-up), and Transformers(live-action AND animated[secret: Optimus Prime's death scene makes me cry every time]). Sports: he wears blue pinstripes, and I love that dirty water. Religion: not a HUGE difference in most beliefs(he's agnostic, I'm the "Big A", and we're very critical thinkers), but I'm a little more definite in my final stance than he is. And overall, his brain is forever in engineer-mode, tinkering and paying attention to detail, while my creative self is always scheming, playing with words and research, and looking at the big picture.

Our biggest(and sometimes most taxing) differences are our positions on politics. This comes into play on nearly a daily basis.

I hate using these terms, since we don't fully fit into them, but for the sake of simplicity, I'll resort to them. We're both relatively moderate, or at least do not follow any certain paths blindly. He leans more to the right, is somewhat disenchanted with the political party system, yet is still registered as Republican because he wants to see a change in the party. I, on the other hand, lean to the left, am registered as unaffiliated, and completely against the party system.

Now some positions we share, like marriage(govt. should stay out of ALL marriages), abortion(disagree in theory, agree in practice and big on improving pregnancy prevention), disability rights(mostly autism, because of me), and improving healthcare access(but how, we're not sure).

But ever since we've been together, I don't recall us ever voting for the same politician. And that's where the strain starts. Because if one of us wins, we still lose, having to deal with the other's disappointment for a number of years. Obviously, I wanted Obama to win, but a teeny tiny part of me would have been relieved to see McCain win just to spare my husband the disappointment that I felt in '04.

Also, he is by far better at making an argument that I am. When he airs his grievances, it's like Festivus. 1) He talks. A LOT. 2) He's a straight-shooter. I'm ok with writing my arguments, since I can sit down and think about my positions, but verbally, I'm weak. So I just keep my big trap shut most of the time. This is one of my big problems. I have to work on being more outspoken about my stances without sounding pushy or whiny or dumb. I'm an aspie, my social skills suck.

I hate to admit this, but sometimes I also take his complaints personally. I'll feel like he's stomping on my beliefs. I have to remind myself that he does believe that I make well-thought-out decisions. Sometimes he's just frustrated, and sometimes I'm sensitive. And besides, we often do have very constructive conversations, and we learn things from each other.

We often wonder how on earth Arnold and Maria, or Carville and his wife(can never remember her name!) ever make it without wanting to duke it out.

Star Sex

I really wanted to type about something with a little substance.
